In Marco Polo's time caravans traveled from Europe to Asia carrying
treasures to exchange for Chinese silks. Legend has it that some caravans
took small, long-haired dogs to the Chinese court where they were bred
with other Chinese breeds to produce a royal companion, the Shih Tzu.
This route was called the "Silk Road."
