Are You Ready For Your Interview?

Breeders will ask questions like . . .

    Drawing by Gladys Ray
  1. Do you now or have you ever had a dog? Other pets?

  2. What exactly are you looking for? A pet? A show dog? A dog for obedience or agility training?

  3. Do you have children? How old are they? If they are pre-schoolers are you aware of the need to protect a young puppy from their over-enthusiastic play?

  4. Who will be taking care of the dog?

  5. Do you work away from the home? How long are you gone? Do you realize that being gone for long periods will make it more difficult to housebreak a puppy? That a lonely/bored dog can become a destructive dog? Is there someone who could check on the dog during the day?

  6. Do you have a fenced yard?

  7. Do you understand and agree that your pet will have to be spayed/neutered at your expense?

Difference Between The Sexes

Males tend to be more affectionate and wanting to please than most females; although of course there are exceptions. Males also tend to housebreak easier and quicker. Females can often be a little moody, even after they are spayed. When a family specifies a certain sex, I always advise them to see what's available without knowing which is male or female and find the puppy/dog that most appeals to them. Sex should not be the determining factor any more than color.
